It was a decidedly mediocre week for the Dodgers minor-league system with some standout performances. The Isotopes, Lookouts, and Arizona League Dodgers are on the verge of making the playoffs, while the Quakes are trying to nail down the wild card spot in the California League.

The Raptors scored the most runs this week with 69, and the Lookouts pitching, despite losing many arms via trades by the big club, allowed just 24 runs this week.

Player Of The Week

Scott Van Slyke – OF/1B

Van Slyke earned his second consecutive award (fourth overall) by going 8-for-21 (.381) with a home run, four doubles, three RBI, three runs scored, and six walks. He’s hitting .325/.408/.575 in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

Pitcher Of The Week

Will Savage – RHP

Savage, who was once 6-0 on the season, had a really good outing this past week: 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. He’s not faring well in the league on the season, but he throws an occasional good game.

Player Of The Week

Jake Lemmerman – SS

This one was close between Lemmerman and Bobby Coyle, but I gave the nod to Late Night. He went 10-for-22 (.456) with a home run, three doubles, a triple, seven RBI and three runs scored. It’s just his second honor of the season. His 2012 has been rather disappointing, especially since I was higher on him than a prospect than most.

Zach Lee – RHP

Lee is definitely getting the hang of the Southern League now. He had a fantastic outing this past week: 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. His overall ERA is lower now than it was when he was promoted from Rancho Cucamonga, as he has a 4.18 ERA with the Lookouts. This is his fourth honor of the season (third since being promoted) for the Dodgers best prospect.

Austin Gallagher – LF

Gallagher, who started this season as a first baseman, has been playing a lot of left field and he had his best week of the season to date: 13-for-26 (.500) with two home runs, three doubles, 11 RBI, nine runs scored, and six walks. Gallagher missed some time with an injury this season but still owns a career-high slugging percentage (.474). It’d be more impressive if he wasn’t repeating the level.

Jordan Roberts – LHP

It’s hard to find a good pitcher when a team gives up 68 runs in seven games, but Roberts did admirable work out of the Quakes bullpen this week: 10 2/3 IP, 13 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 8 K. Roberts is, somehow, 8-0 on the season with a 3.57 ERA. His peripherals, however, aren’t as nice as his undefeated record (for whatever that’s worth) and his decent ERA.

Great Lakes Loons (4-3)

Player Of The Week

Tyler Ogle – C

After destroying the Arizona League, Ogle was promoted to Great Lakes and then demoted to Ogden before being repromoted to Great Lakes. This week, he went 7-for-15 (.467) with two home runs, three RBI, and four runs scored.

Pitcher Of The Week

James Campbell – RHP

Campbell, the Dodgers 12th-round pick this year, made three appearances this week, including his first start: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K. Those were his totals from the week, not his start, unfortunately. Still, Campbell does have some ability and, like many relievers, should move rather quickly through the system.

Jesus Valdez – 1B/RF

This one could have gone to Corey Seager, Malcolm Holland, or Bladimir Franco, but Valdez’s performance was the best. He went 13-for-31 (.419) with two home runs, five doubles, 14 RBI, and nine runs scored. Valdez is enjoying lots of success with Ogden, posting a .325/.399/.516 triple slash with nine home runs and 16 doubles.

Ross Stripling – RHP

Stripling, the Dodgers fifth-round pick, profiles as a starting pitcher, but he hasn’t thrown many innings per start because the club wants to limit his innings. But he threw well this week: 6 IP, 5 H, 1R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. He owns a 0.85 ERA and a 35:4 K:BB ratio.

Cory Embree – OF

Embree, the Dodgers 38th-round pick, has hit well for the Arizona League Dodgers this season as a 20-year-old. In limited action this week, he was the team’s best: 6-for-11 (.545) with a double, two triples, six RBI, and two runs scored. He’s hitting .320/.409/.493 on the season.

Zachary Bird – RHP

Bird, widely considered a sleeper from the Dodgers 2012 draft class, had a nice outing this week: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. He averages more than a strikeout per inning and is someone to keep tabs on going forward.

Player Of The Week

Josmar Cordero – C/1B

The team only played five games and scored 13 runs this week, so this award had to go to someone. Cordero was the best of the bunch: he went 5-for-13 (.385) with two doubles and two RBI. He finished his third stint in the league with six home runs, 19 doubles, 47 RBI, and 50 runs scored.

This shouldn’t come as any surprise to followers of the Dominican Summer League Dodgers or readers of this feature. On the year, Cordero’s line is a scintillating .362/.419/.533/.952, easily making him the best hitter on the squad. Therefore, if one were into sports betting, then Cordero has been the one to wager on in 2012 when it comes to Player Of The Week nods due to his consistent production week-to-week and the lack of other relevant bats on the team.

Pitcher Of The Week

Luis Silverio – LHP

Silverio had the best outing of any DSL Dodger this week, as the team ended its season: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K. He had a nice showing in the league. I wanted to give this to Bryan Munoz (the 16-year-old the Dodgers signed), but he only threw one inning this week.

It was a mediocre week for three of the four Dodgers minor-league affiliates, but the Albuquerque Isotopes had smooth sailing. Elsewhere, O’Koyea Dickson has been on fire since making his season debut more than a week ago.

Albuquerque tied with Rancho Cucamonga in giving up the fewest runs, but the ‘Topes did it in seven games while the Quakes did it in six. However, the Quakes scored the most runs (44) while the Isotopes were second at 39.

Player Of The Week

Luis Cruz – SS

Cruz, who isn’t a prospect, had a solid week for the ‘Topes, going 8-for-24 (.333) with a home run, four doubles, seven RBI, and three runs scored. Cruz, who’s been the every day shortstop for the ‘Topes, has a .318/.341/.504 line on the season.

Cruz was one of the final players in camp this spring for the Dodgers and isn’t likely to see time in Los Angeles. However, injuries do happen, so I wouldn’t count out a Dodger debut just yet.

Pitcher Of The Week

Will Savage – RHP

Savage has been one of the best stories for the Isotopes on the mound. He’s 7-0 this season with a 3.40 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 42 1/3 innings. This week, he went 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA in 12 2/3 innings: 13 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, and 4 K. As you can see, the lack of strikeouts is bound to catch up to him — especially in Albuquerque. But, he’s been one of the Isotopes’ best starting pitchers thus far.

Luis Nunez – SS

This one was close between Nunez and J.T. Wise, but I gave the nod to Nunez because he had more significant hits. He went 7-for-24 (.292) with two home runs, seven RBI, a double, and three runs scored. The 25-year-old has a team-leading 23 RBI on the season, but he’s hitting just .255/.312/.408 on the season. He’s not much of a prospect at this point.

Javier Solano – RHP

I could have gone with Ethan Martin here (7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K), but I wanted to spread the love around a bit. So, I’m going with a guy who doesn’t get nearly enough credit in the Dodgers system in Solano. His line for the week is as follows: 5 2/3 IP, 5 H, 1 R (earned), 1 BB, 8 K. While he gives up too many hits for my liking, he still has a solid line on the season: 23 2/3 IP, 3.42 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and an impressive 24:4 K:BB ratio. The 22-year-old is not exactly atop the right-handed reliever depth chart, but efforts like he put in this week certainly help his case.

Leon Landry – CF

Now this is the Leon Landry I expected to see last season. Fresh off his disabled list stint on May 6th, Landry had himself quite a week: 12-for-27 (.444) with three triples, a double, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Landry was playing well before he suffered a concussion on April 15th, and he has picked up right where he left off, as he leads the Quakes with a 1.013 OPS. He’s obviously enjoying the friendly confines of the California League, but he does possess some really good skills (speed, defense, on-base ability).

Pitcher Of The Week

Garrett Gould – RHP

This one was a struggle, as no one for the Quakes had a particularly good week, a fact backed by the 40 runs the staff allowed in six games. Gould only threw once, but he was the best of the bunch: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R (earned), 4 BB, 2 K. It was a solid outing runs-wise, but he had two more walks than strikeouts, and for a guy averaging 13.7 K/9 coming into the game, getting just two was a tad disappointing. He has a 4.91 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and a 3.23 FIP in 33 innings this season.

Player Of The Week

O’Koyea Dickson – 1B/DH

Dickson joined the Loons on May 4th and has hit the ground running. This week, he posted some solid numbers: 8-for-22 (.364) with a home run, four doubles, two RBI, three runs scored, and three walks. On the season though, Dickson is at an even better .400/.486/.767, thanks in large part to seven of his 12 hits going for extra bases.

He could see some time in Rancho Cucamonga if he keeps up his torrid pace.

Pitcher Of The Week

Ryan O’Sullivan – RHP

Last year’s fourth-round pick, O’Sullivan made one start this week and fared quite well: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R (unearned), 1 BB, 1 K. The lack of strikeouts isn’t great, but if the 21-year-old is getting the job done, who am I to complain?

It was O’Sullivan’s second start of the season. Overall, he has a 2.52 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 3.24 FIP, and a 6.5 H/9. So far, so good.

Pitching was the story this week with the Dodgers minor-league system, despite giving up more runs than scored at all but one level. Some strong performances by Chris Reed, Garrett Gould, and Ethan Martin weren’t enough to make the cut.

The Isotopes checked in with the best record at 3-3, while the Lookouts scored the most runs this week with 40.

Tim Federowicz – C

It was a quiet week offensively for Albuquerque, but everyone’s favorite backup catcher topped this week’s offensive performer list. Federowicz went 7-for-19 (.368) with two doubles, three RBI, and three runs scored. Federowicz has a nice triple slash through 21 games with the Isotopes: .299/.360/.468.

Will Savage – RHP

Savage started two games this week and posted quality starts in both, leading to a solid week — and not just by Pacific Coast League standards: 1-0 W-L, 12 IP, 8 H, 4 R (earned), 2 BB, 5 K. He isn’t much of a prospect at this point as a 27-year-old, but he has thrown well with the ‘Topes so far. The two starts were the first for him this season.

Player Of The Week

Rafael Ynoa – 2B

Ynoa led the Lookouts offense this week, going 8-for-24 (.333) with a double, two RBI, two runs scored, a walk, and two stolen bases. The 24-year-old came into the week riding a 4-for-5 day on April 22nd, so he was definitely on a hot streak. His line stands at .299/.347/.373 for the season.

Pitcher Of The Week

Matt Magill – RHP

Magill made two starts for the Lookouts this week and won them both. His line for the week: 14 IP, 11 H, 2 R (earned), 5 BB, 13 K. Magill’s stuff has always been a question because of his fringe-average fastball, but his off-speed stuff is keeping Southern League hitters off-balance. His 10.73 K/9 is best on the team and trails only James Paxton (Seattle) and Trevor Bauer (Arizona) among starting pitchers with 20 or more innings pitched.

He was also named Southern League Pitcher Of The Week, so I think I’m spot-on with this choice.

C.J. Retherford – 3B

Before you get excited, Retherford had a great week as a 26-year-old in High-A. Still, he went 8-for-22 (.364) with three doubles, two RBI, four runs scored, and three walks.

It was a rough week offensively, as the team averaged just three runs per game. With Leon Landry and Joc Pederson out, and guys like Jonathan Garcia and Austin Gallagher struggling (the former more than the latter), it’s going to be a long season for the Quakes at this rate.

Pitcher Of The Week

Andres Santiago – RHP

Santiago had himself a great game on Sunday, which, when coupled with his “meh” start from Tuesday, gives him the slight edge on Garrett Gould. Gould, while dominant in relief of an ineffective Ronald Belisario on Saturday (6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 12K), had a poor start on April 23rd (3 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 7 K), letting Santiago pass him.

Santiago, 22, went 6 2/3 innings on Sunday, allowed two hits and struck out 11. His line for the week is as follows: 1-1 W-L, 11 2/3 IP, 13 H, 5 R (earned), 1 BB, 18 K. He now owns a sparkling 2.22 ERA in 24 1/3 innings.

Devin Shines – OF

Shines, the 5’9″ outfielder from Oklahoma State University, went 6-for-20 (.300) this week with a home run, four RBI, and a run scored. As you could probably already tell, it was a light week offensively throughout the Dodgers system, and Low-A was no exception. After today’s game, Shines’ triple slash is a respectable .277/.338/.462. In a pitcher’s league, that’s not too bad, but he is doing it as a 22-soon-to-be-23-year-old, so take it with a grain of salt.

Pitcher Of The Week

Jose Dominguez – RHP

This was a tough one between Dominguez and Arismendy Ozoria, who had a solid week himself. But Dominguez threw four scoreless innings, allowed no hits, two walks, and struck out four. He’s a favorite of Jared Massey at LA Dugout, who thinks he’s being stretched out to possibly go into the Loons’ rotation.

After today’s game (4 IP, 1 H, 6 K), Dominguez, 21, has a 1.83 ERA, a 10.5 K/9, a 1.92 ground ball to fly ball ratio, and a .130 opponents batting average on the season.

The Dodgers won’t know for certain the extent of Ivan De Jesus’ oblique injury until an MRI is taken Monday, but manager Don Mattingly conceded any playing time missed greatly hampers an already-longshot bid for an Opening Day roster spot.

“It’s hard to compete when you can’t be out there,” said Mattingly. “With this type of injury, there’s not a lot you can do. If you lose eight to 10 days, how many days does it take just to get your timing back? Not a good time to get hurt. You could see it on his face last night. These guys know it hurts your chance.”

Hopefully it’s just a mild strain, but they don’t sound that optimistic.

In better news, Matt Guerrier sounds like he might be ready to go by the start of the season.

Mattingly had better news on reliever Matt Guerrier, who has been out a week with lower back pain. He said the right-hander has continued to improve and plans to throw off a mound Monday. If that goes well, he could face hitters in a simulated game Wednesday and might be game-ready by next weekend.

I’m starting to wonder if it might be better just to put him on the disabled list to start the season and take it slow.

The bullpen is very deep this year, so he would just be a middle reliever with this group anyway. Plus, the team would get extra time to evaluate a camp arm in actual games.

Eight more players were cut from the Dodgers today, seven of whom were reassigned and one who was released.

The Dodgers made their second round of player cuts on Sunday, moving four pitchers and four position players out of the Major League clubhouse.

Left-handed pitcher Alberto Castillo was released. Reassigned to Minor League camp were these non-roster invitees: pitchers Ryan Tucker, Matt Chico and Will Savage; catchers Gorman Erickson and Matt Wallach; and infielders Lance Zawadzki and Jeff Baisley.

I actually wanted to see more of Gorman Erickson, but as with the last time, no real surprises.
