2013 Los Angeles Dodgers Season Review: Catchers

AJEllisSR

A.J. Ellis A.J. Ellis entered 2013 as a key, but underrated, component to the team’s success. He was a player who patrolled a scarce defensive position and could consistently work counts, provide occasional pop, and handle a deep and talented pitching staff. Of course, it was always unlikely that he’d match his stellar 2012 campaign (.270/.373/.414/.787, 13 HR, 3.7 fWAR/3.3 ... Read More »

The brawl at Chavez Ravine was stupid for multiple reasons, but hey, at least it was GIFtastic

So the Dodgers and Diamondbacks sort of had it out with each other on Tuesday. It all started when Ian Kennedy hit Yasiel Puig in the face with a fastball. Amazingly, he was okay and stayed in the game. The following inning, Zack Greinke plunked Miguel Montero in the back, apparently in retaliation. This is where it gets sort of ... Read More »

Mark Ellis finally hit the 15-day DL, being placed on it Monday retroactive to April 27. The Dodgers activated Chris Capuano from the 15-day DL in a corresponding move. Making Moves: The aftermath of a brawl + a wild Sean Burroughs appears!

The Zack Greinke/Carlos Quentin/Dodgers/Padres debacle led to a lot of discussion and a couple of suspensions/fines: one for Quentin and one for Jerry Hairston Jr. While Zack Greinke is expected to miss eight weeks after surgery to repair his broken left collarbone, Carlos Quentin of the Padres will miss eight games. Jerry Hairston, who ran toward the Padres dugout after ... Read More »

Dodgers deal Aaron Harang for Ramon Hernandez, add depth, pay another to play elsewhere

Yesterday, the Dodgers dealt Aaron Harang to the Rockies for catcher Ramon Hernandez and effectively cleared room in their bullpen for the return of Chad Billingsley on Wednesday. The Dodgers on Saturday made official their trade of pitcher Aaron Harang and cash to the Rockies for catcher Ramon Hernandez. Oddly enough though, the Rockies designated Harang for assignment immediately, so ... Read More »

Making Moves: Dodgers cut 6, release 4, sign 2 + Puig to start in minors, T-Fed backup favorite

MattMagillDodgers

The Dodgers have sent Matt Magill, Steven Ames, and Matt Palmer to minor-league camp, removing them from contention for a 25-man roster spot. Not surprising for any of the three, as Magill and Ames are still a year-plus away from being legitimate roster contenders – especially considering the depth of the Dodgers staff and pen – and Palmer recently underwent ... ZiPS projects the 2013 Dodgers: Good but not great

MattKempInjured

The 2013 projection for the Dodgers from Dan Szymborski‘s ZiPS system was released last week, and given that it’s probably my favorite forecasting tool, it’s worth a look to see how the team fared. Forecasting is not a complete science, obviously, and I’ll address some of the potential pitfalls as we go along, but it’s better to use objective tools ... Read More »
