Down On The Farm – Winter Leagues Update: Alexander Guerrero concern, Chris Reed

Our latest installment covers the last two weeks or so of Winter League action, including perhaps reason to worry about Alexander Guerrero‘s readiness.

The lack of updates goes hand-in-hand with the lack of relevant prospects still playing.

Dominican Winter League

Alexander Guerrero – 2B

Guerrero has reached safely in just six of his last 22 plate appearances with a pair of doubles. While he hasn’t swung the bat well, he has been healthy during that stretch and has at least been able to get some reps in.

Second base in 2014 is still his job to lose, but the Dodgers can’t feel especially confident about not having a backup plan at the moment.

Angel Castro – RHP

Castro threw seven strong innings in his last outing, fanning six while allowing two unearned runs and ten baserunners.

Venezuelan Winter League

Jamie Romak – OF

Romak is hitting .250/.348/.350/.698 over his last ten contests, with two extra-base hits and a 16:5 K:BB mark.

Chris Reed – LHP

Reed has not started since the end of November.

With that in mind, here’s a fantastic interview he did with David Laurila of FanGraphs from last year.

Better than thinking about his winter performance.

Mexican Winter League

Luis Cruz – IF

Cruz is slashing .268/.333/.268/.601 over his last ten games with no extra-base hits. Are we still so sure this isn’t that Luis Cruz? Because it sure sounds like that Luis Cruz.

Juan Noriega – RHP

Noriega has whiffed four while allowing no walks and four hits over his last 4.1 innings.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Osvaldo Martinez – 3B

Osvaldo has reached safely in 12 of his last 35 plate appearances with a 5:2 K:BB mark and three extra-base hits in that time span.
