Down On The Farm: Week Of August 26 – Urias, Stripling, Jacobs, Baldwin, Law, Arano

JulioUrias

With the regular season ending for all affiliates aside from Ogden, Monday’s games are included in this week’s recap.

Also of note is that the Dodgers have shut down Julio Urias, who hit his strict innings limit, even though Great Lakes made the playoffs.

It’s a smart move, of course.

Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes (5-3)

Player Of The Week – 8/26

Brian Barden – 3B

.333/.524/.533/1.057, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 Runs, 4 BB, 4 K, 1 SB

The journeyman infielder had a strong week amongst a sea of under-performing Topes at the dish. 2013 has been a struggle for the 32-year-old, but he ended it with a bang.

Pitcher Of The Week – 8/26

Red Patterson – LHP

7 IP, 1 Run, 5 Hits, 7 K, 1 BB

Patterson gets the nod for the second straight week as he ends his strong 2013 campaign on a high-note.

Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts (1-6)

Player Of The Week – 8/26

Gorman Erickson – C

333/.333/.667/1.000, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 Runs, 0 BB, 5 K

Griff has dealt with injuries in 2013 and had a terrible season overall, so the promise he flashed a couple of seasons ago seems to certainly be a thing of the past.

Pitcher Of The Week – 8/26

Ross Stripling – RHP

7 IP, 2 Runs, 5 Hits, 4 K, 0 BB

Stripling finished off his strong 2013 by not allowing more than two earned runs in any of his final six starts.

High-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (5-3)

Player Of The Week – 8/26

Chris Jacobs – 1B

.400/.455/1.300/1.755, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 3 Runs, 1 BB, 3 K

Jacobs made the most of his three games and 11 plate appearances. He’s proven he can hit at High-A pitching, but AA competition was a big struggle the one time he had a chance.

Honorable mention to O’Koyea Dickson for an excellent week (.318/.407/.591/.998, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 4 Runs, 1 3B, 1 2B).

Pitcher Of The Week – 8/26

Matt Shelton – RHP

9.1 IP, 4 Runs (3 ER), 10 Hits, 10 K, 2 BB

The soon-to-be 25-year-old out of Sam Houston State just edges out Lindsey Caughel (14 IP, 6 Runs [2 ER], 8 K, 4 BB) on the strength of better swing-and-miss stuff this week.

Shelton has had a good season in Rancho, pitching almost exclusively in relief (3.35 FIP, 8.87 K/9).

Low-A Great Lakes Loons (3-4)

Player Of The Week – 8/26

James Baldwin – OF

.214/.389/.571/.960, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 Runs, 1 3B, 3 BB, 5 K, 2 SB

The 21-year-old has continued to struggle after a somewhat promising 2011 season.

On the bright side, his BB% has increased in each of his four pro seasons. On the downside, everything else. He strikes out a ludicrous amount (~30% in each of his four seasons, increasing every year to 36% [!] in 2013) and he also doesn’t hit for power.

Pitcher Of The Week – 8/26

Julio Urias – LHP

4 IP, 0 Runs, 2 Hits, 5 K, 0 BB

Urias made the most of his last appearance of 2013 and finishes the year strong (2.87 FIP, 11.10 K/9, 2.65 BB/9), especially considering he pitched in Low-A ball this year as a 16/17-year-old.

Ogden Raptors (4-3)

Player Of The Week – 8/26

Adam Law – 3B

.444/.464/.519/.983, 2 RBI, 9 Runs, 2 2B, 1 BB, 3 K, 5 SB

It was razor close between Law and Joey Curletta (.400/.429/.600/1.029, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 3 Runs, 2 2B, 2 BB, 7 K).

The Dodgers’ 12th-round pick in 2013 out of BYU, Law has had a tremendous start to his pro career in Ogden and the Arizona League, and it would be huge for the organization if he can stick at third and continue to develop into something worthwhile at the major league level.

Pitcher Of The Week – 8/26

Jake Fisher – LHP

5 IP, 1 Run, 6 Hits, 5 K, 1 BB

Fisher, a 22-year-old selected in the 22nd round of the 2013 draft, has struggled in his Pioneer League debut, but put up his best start of the season this week.

Arizona League Dodgers (3-2)

The Arizona League Dodgers lost to the Arizona League Giants on Sunday in the AZL Championship Game.

Player Of The Week – 8/26

Josmar Cordero – 1B/DH

.667/.667/1.333/2.000, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 Runs, 1 2B, 0 BB, 0 K

Cordero made the most of his six plate appearances by reaching base four times and clubbing two extra-base hits. The 21-year-old Venezuelan has been solid in his AZL debut.

Pitcher Of The Week – 8/26

Victor Arano – RHP

9 IP, 4 Runs, 10 Hits, 11 K, 1 BB

It was a two-start week for Arano (including the AZL Championship), and the 18-year-old put forth a strong week to close out a solid debut campaign in the AZL. He posted a 3.06 FIP and ~3.76:1 K:BB ratio in a season he split between starting and relieving.
