It talks about how some people say Hanley will become a clubhouse problem for the Dodgers but doesn’t back it up with how or why. It also talks about people with the Red Sox stating that Gonzalez and Crawford are not as good a guys as they’re made out to be, but again, with no statements backing up with what this is referring to. Then it goes on to talk about some people questioning Mattingly’s game management with no mentions of who they are or what they question. Ok, we all know about the bunting issue…but besides that, what specifically is being said?
Out of all of that, what really got me was this line in parenthesis…”and others aren’t too impressed with his bench coach, Trey Hillman”. Trey Hillman? Really? Impressed with what? How do you gauge a bench coach? And again, who said this? Bench coaches are so under the radar, I think the first time I even heard talk about one of them was when Schaefer was getting on Kemp for not backing up 2B. I’ve hardly seen anything ever written about Hillman. Has anyone heard these comments being made about him? Not that I care, this just seems like a really weird thing to include in this piece that already seemed somewhat manufactured.
Knobler seems to be assuming the reader has insight into all of these things he’s talking about to then be able to give the Dodgers side of it. It just seems like they’re giving defense to a bag of hot air though, because none of it is supported with any detail of what these actual claims are. I didn’t get it. Can’t we just let the team get on the field and start playing instead of trying to decide their fate for them?
Precisely, it’s all a bunch of sniping and CYA. People don’t feed journos stories only during free agency.
