Dodgers sign 11 of their 2012 draft picks, including Jesmuel Valentin

The Dodgers agreed to terms with 11 of their selections from the 2012 MLB Draft.

The Dodgers announced the signings of 11 recent draftees, including supplemental pick shortstop Jesmuel Valentin, the 51st overall selection and the son of former Dodger Jose Valentin.

The recommended slot bonus for the 51st pick was $984,700. Valentin, from the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and High School, was committed to Louisiana State if he hadn’t signed.

Also signed and headed to Arizona for mini-camp: pitcher Thomas Stripling (fifth round); outfielder Theo Alexander (seventh round), who took batting practice with the big league club in Seattle on Saturday; outfielder Jeremy Rathjen (11th); shortstop Darnell Sweeney (13th); pitcher Matthew Reckling (14th); pitcher Jacob Hermsen (28th); catcher John Cannon (29th); pitcher Jordan Hershiser (34th); catcher Austin Cowen (35th); and outfielder Corey Embree (38th).

Nothing surprising there.

Should be interesting to see how much Corey Seager and Onelkis Garcia want and how long they’ll hold out for.

  1. what’s your gut instinct on seager signing? I’m even money on him signing and I don’t think garcia will sign at all.

    • I think they have to get Seager done, but I don’t think he signs that much above slot.

Current trends don’t indicate otherwise either.

      • Hope you’re right, we’re in desperate need of a plus prospect at the 3b position.

  2. Can’t wait to see some more early round position players come through the farm again…Logan’s track record has been good thus far and he really seems high on this years draft. The Logan White and Moriyama (or is it now Moletta? lmao :P) seals of approval are all I need to get excited.

    • He’s not talked about a lot but I think DeJan Watson has to be given a lot of credit. Sure, White and his scouts clearly have done a good job but Watson and his group are responsible for taking the talent that’s been drafted and actually turning them into major league players.

BTW, White is _always_ high on his drafts ;)

      • Yeah, both are pretty behind the scenes and you don’t see a whole lot written about them, but even more so with Watson, so I sometimes forget about him. It’s unfortunate cuz those two usually give a lot of good insight about the young players…especially Watson.

      • His optimism this year is far greater than last year though.
